Lee Skipsey
Lee started his playing at the Salvation Army at the Regent Hall Corps in London,
with a very high standard of musical tuition. He started playing the cornet in
the young peoples band at the age of 7, but was alwats keen to play percussion.
Soon after he moved with his parents to the Yorkshire Area where he furthered
his playing on cornet and percussion if the opportunity arose.
Eventually at the Leeds West Hunslet Corps of the Salvation Army he moved
onto percussion in the band and played with many other army bands as a guest
soloist. Lee would be called upon on a regular basis for recordings and
concerts within the SA. He also toured Australia with the International Staff
Songsters accompanied most of the vocal contemporary soloists.
At the age of 21 he moved to Milton Keynes and was empoyed as the Youth
Director for Milton Keynes. Within this time he set up youth clubs, youth
advisory boards, sporting clubs and music groups seeing on average around 500
young people per week.
Lee then decided a change of career was in order and bought a hairdressers in
the Yorkshire town of Bingley. He carried on playing mostly on a free lance
basis for big bands, orchesras and brass bands. He has been princiapl
percussionist at various music schools and has won player of the year on two
occasions.
He is now principal percussionist of Black Dyke and has played with the band
for four years. Lee is mostly respected for his kit playing turning heads in the
biggest concerts in the brass band calender. The highlight so far has been
accompanying James Morrison at Black Dykes 150th Celebration Concert in the
Bridgewater Hall. Manchester.
